Prior to the University of Liverpool Men’s Rugby League Varsity game against Liverpool John Moores, I had the chance to ask their captain, Angus Parkin, a few questions about how the team is feeling on the final days leading up to the match.
Do you feel confident in the team and how they’ll perform on Wednesday?
Yes, we always have a strong showing at varsity and should have won the last two years. It’s quite a few of the players last year at the University, so we’re expecting a big performance to round off their time playing for our team.
As a team what are your biggest strengths?
We’ve got plenty of skill and speed in our team and our back line can always get us out of trouble if we need it.
Sometimes the team struggle with aggression but there will be no problem with that against Liverpool John Moores.
How have you been preparing for Wednesday’s game, in terms of training etc?
The team has had extra sessions to blow off the cobwebs post-easter break and we’re looking in good shape, the team is raring to get going on Wednesday.
How have you used last year’s varsity performance and built on that to improve your performance this year?
We made a mistake just before halftime last year and that deflated us a bit so we’ll be aiming to cut down our mistakes on Wednesday.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or anything you do for luck?
It’s a unique ritual that came from a former player, we pray to the God of Thunder, Thor, to curry favour.
How are you going to celebrate if you win?
Booze and Level.
The Men’ Rugby League game is taking place on Wednesday the 11th of April at 3 pm at the Wyncote Sports Ground.
