‘Is it all in my head?’ is the question implored by Fizzy Blood vocalist/guitarist Benji Inkley as the band’s latest single, ‘January Sun’, closes amid a barrage of distorted chaos. Perhaps, though such postulations don’t discard from the very tangible and real qualities the band, on this evidence, clearly possess. Carefully composed though delivered with a dangerous intensity, the track slowly builds, and builds, and builds, before unleashing itself on its audience in a flurry of strained vocals and frenetic instrumentation.
Taken from their forthcoming EP Patience, the single reflects the band’s ability to not only create a sense of anticipation, but to also smash it to pieces when it has reached its apogee. Inkley’s vocals are a commanding presence throughout, equally adept at both singing and shouting and so providing the track with an added dynamic and depth, whether it be in the temperance of the opening, or the desperation at its close. Balancing a tight and polished performance without compromising any of the bite is no mean feat, yet Fizzy Blood have achieved such a thing with deceptive ease. With the EP coming out in the next month or so, the near future is certainly looking very bright indeed for this talented five-piece.
