‘To Let’ signs banned on Smithdown

‘To Let’ signs have been banned in the student area due to concerns about crime and community safety.

Smithdown Road and the surrounding area are popular places for students to live, including many at the University of Liverpool. As a result, however, this has led to many of the houses being advertised for letting purposes.

With ‘To Let’ boards on almost every other house, residents have protested at the constant presence of these signs.

Not only do the signs make the area seem like nobody wants to live there, this advertising also puts students at risk of burglary by pointing out where potentially empty or vulnerable houses are.

People in the area have described the situation as ‘crazy‘, with Greenbank ward councillor Laura Robertson-Collins even stating that some people had gone as far as to put fairy lights around the boards.

Liverpool City Council has asked landlords to remove the signs.
